Country: China

Name: Guoqing Zhang

Company: WSP Parsons Brinkerhoff

Position: Transport Planner

ITS Course: MSc (Eng) Transport Planning and Engineering, 2013

I’m currently working as a Transport Planner at WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff in Shanghai and am responsible for developing strategic transport models for cities in both China and abroad.

My experience at ITS has helped in my job and career because of the courses I took, such as network modelling and stated preference, as they provide the solid foundation for when I’m involved in transport demand forecasting for cities in China, Jordan, UAE, Serbia and Romania.

I chose my ITS course and the University of Leeds simply because ITS is regarded as a prestigious institute internationally. The study experience at ITS enabled me to be more capable in transport consultancy in China.

My advice to new students interested in this course and a career in transport is that ITS provides almost every discipline/course in Transport. Staff here are friendly and helpful for our international students. I got very helpful advice from James Laird and Judith Wang when applying for jobs. I want to take this opportunity to thank ITS and my supervisor Dr. James Laird in particular. Without him, I couldn't be invited to give a presentation in Transport Scotland about my dissertation. And because of James' contribution, my dissertation is published in STAR conference in Glasgow, which is mentioned twice in the magazine 'Local Transport Today', and recently published in HKSTS in HK.

As an international student, my advice to other ITS international students who are seeking work in the transport sector is that graduating from ITS provides us with a good opportunity when applying for jobs in international consultancies.

I feel the highlight of my career so far has been working as an international consultant for both public and private sectors in China and abroad.

During the the 19th International Conference of Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies in December 2015 I met Simon Shepherd and Ronghui Liu from ITS and we had a very nice dinner with other HK alumni. I believe I'll meet more ITS guys as more and more Chinese students choose ITS to study transport. WCTR 2016 was held in Shanghai and Guoqing was our alumni speaker at the alumni and friends of ITS event
