Air Quality and Health

Transport and health are inextricably linked.  Our research evaluates these links to inform transport policy.

Active travel plays a key role in reducing energy demand from the transport sector and the absence of emissions makes a positive contribution to local air quality. Improved safety and accessibility of transport systems can make further positive contributions to public health.

Our research under the Air Quality and Health theme includes:

  • Active travel - how to encourage walking and cycling
  • Exposure to air and noise pollutants associated with the transport system
  • Impact of transport policies on public health
  • Road and pedestrian safety
  • Social isolation, access to healthcare and other quality of life issues
