Courses and Training

The Institute for Transport Studies is the largest single academic group involved in transport teaching in the UK. In a typical year some 500 undergraduate students take its modules, around 80 are registered for postgraduate courses, up to 40 are registered as research students, and up to 100 delegates participate in its short courses.

The Institute aims to continue to make a significant contribution to resolving the serious skills shortage currently faced by the UK transport sector, and to improving the quantity and quality of transport professionals internationally. To enable these outcomes its specific aims are:

  • to maintain its position as one of the leading providers of postgraduate training in transport internationally, while accepting that the market for such training will continue to change substantially

  • to maintain the quality of its undergraduate and postgraduate provision, while adjusting its content to reflect the changing needs of the profession

  • to seek ways of further enhancing the learning experience of our students

  • to continue to be a major provider of research training nationally and internationally, at both MRes and PhD level, while developing new forms of provision such as the Marie Curie schemes.
