Roger Allport

Country: UK

Name: Roger Allport

Company: Allport Associates Ltd

Position: 1-man consultancy

ITS Course: MA Transport Economics, 1980

After graduating from ITS I worked for Halcrow Fox and Associates as Director for 13 years followed by 3 years with Halcrow Consulting as Director and retired in 2006. I then set up and run my own 1-man consultancy, Allport Associates Ltd, where I work for clients worldwide. I also have a retainer arrangement with the Railway & Transport Strategy Centre at Imperial College London. I have worked on projects in Vietnam, China and Hungary, to name a few, looking at issues such as urban transport management, sustainable development, and assessing performance improvements in public transport.

My key qualifications include; transport policy and strategy advice, identification and appraisal of mass transit projects, development of projects for private and public sector funding, management of major transport projects and applied research into major project development.

My experience at ITS definitely changed the way I think, and it has been hugely influential in everything I have done since.

I chose my ITS course and Leeds University because I had previously worked with transport economics, and phoned Ken Gwilliam on the off-chance. The rest as they say is history. I then followed my MA with a research fellowship from 1980-1982.

If I were to give advice to new students interested in this course I would let them know that the course is demanding and students do need to be motivated. Many students who have done so are now in senior and/or very senior positions in organisations all around the world. It will be a thoroughly worthwhile endeavor for the motivated student.
