Position: Programme Manager Business Transformation

ITS Course: MSc Transport Planning Practice (September 2006 - January 2008)

My current job title is Programme Manager Business Transformation for Darlington Borough Council. I have been seconded for 18 months to coordinate the management of a number of business transformation projects including organisational re-structure, workforce strategy and development of the local authority as a commissioning organization.  At the end of this period I have a substantive role responsible for Transport, Economic and Housing Strategy.

I have not changed employer since completing my MSc. However “I feel that the MSc course developed my analytical and policy development skills, which I have applied at work.”

When considering which Masters course to take and where, there were three main reasons why I chose my course at ITS, primarily because of the its reputation, in addition to the flexibility it offered me to be able to study part time and finally the fact that I was fortunate enough to live within an hour’s commute by train.

If I could give potential students considering taking up an ITS course any advice it would be as follows:

  1. The more effort you put in the more you will get out of the course – it is hard work though particularly if you go part time.
  2. The first term is the hardest - both in terms of hours of study and content. So be prepared.
  3. Plan out your dissertation and meet regularly with your supervisor.
  4. If travelling to Leeds use the train if you can – it’s about 15 minutes walk to the station. Alternatively there is a comprehensive bus system with a number of buses running up past the university.
