Name: Bob Peters

Company: Main Roads Western Australia

Position: Road Asset Planning Manager

ITS Course: MSc Transport Planning and Engineering 1993–1994

I am presently between jobs, but my last job was at Main Roads Western Australia as Road Asset Planning Manager which was of a strategic nature in Western Australia's road authority. I provided advice to the executive and Government on how best to manage and use roads for the long term. The advice was very broad and included long term funding needs, road construction needs and investment priorities.

I am soon to commence work with the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB Group) where I will have a part time senior advisory role with them in the road transport research area.

My experience at ITS was life changing. I had worked as an engineer in a road authority for about 12 years prior to taking the full time MSc (Eng) course.

"At ITS I developed knowledge and skills that gave me the confidence to commence a very rewarding, interesting and productive role in the strategic aspects of road transport management at the state, national and international level."

Although I am presently between jobs I am still the Chairman of the Transport Panel of Engineers Australia in Western Australia, Chairman of the Western Australian Branch of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia, and a member of Australia's National Committee on Transport Engineering.

I wanted to undertake a full time MSc(Eng) at a highly regarded university in England, where the course was interesting and relevant, the staff were highly regarded, and on a personal note in a place where I could take my family and live. ITS at Leeds University was the right place.

"My advice to students interested in this course would be do it!" I would however still recommend they work for at least 5 years before doing the course in order to get some foundations and real experience to use in the course. My real life experience was invaluable and made the course even more relevant and exciting.
