ISO 9001
ITS was the first academic unit in the UK to be ISO 9001 Certified – for contract and grant funded research and for the development of consultancy contracts.
This certification dates back to 1995 and is an integral part of the Institute’s highly developed research management processes. It helps ITS to bid for and win research consultancy work, at a level and scope that is unique amongst transport academics. These consultancy contracts have a range of sponsors, including the Department for Transport, and are competitively tendered. ITS competes for and delivers this work in its own right, and as part of consortia with consultancies and other organisations.
ISO is an internationally recognised standard for quality management systems. It originated in the manufacturing sector, but has since been adopted by providers of services across virtually every business sector. ISO certification involves an independent assessment and audit of business processes - for ITS this has been conducted by SGS Systems and Certification UK Ltd.
